Summer Programs Audition Requirements
Jazz Intensive
Guitar, Piano,
Bass and Melodic Instruments:
- Be prepared to play a jazz standard of your choice. You will be
asked to play the melody once through, improvise through the form
and comp (melodic instruments comp with guide lines and/or embellishments).
- Bass players will be asked to demonstrate their ability to walk
a bassline on a 12-bar blues.
- You will be asked to play various scales on your instrument including
Major scales, minor scales, chromatic scales and possibly some others
(depending on level).
- You may be asked to read a chord chart which will include a simple
melodic passage, standard chord changes, written intro and ending.
Drummers:
- Be prepared to play a jazz standard of your choice. You will play
the form through with Coast Music faculty, you will improvise a
drum/percussion solo and you will return to the song form.
- Coast Music faculty will ask you to demonstrate your ability to
play a variety of styles including Swing, Bossa Nova, and possibly
some afro rhythms, various Latin rhythms, rock and funk (depending
on level).
- You may be asked to read a jazz chart which may include written
rhythms, kicks over time, fills and more.
Vocalists:
- Be prepared to sing a jazz standard of your choice. You will be
asked to sing the melody and improvise.
- You will be asked to demonstrate your vocal range and listening
skills through vocal scales, arpeggios and call and response.
- You may be asked to demonstrate musical knowledge through a brief
assessment
Vocal
Performance Intensive
- Be prepared to sing two short music selections of your choice.
Songs should be contrasting in style and tempo (For example: one
pop ballad and one up-tempo musical). Please choose 16-32 measures
that best shows your vocal range and style.
- You will be asked to demonstrate your vocal range and listening
skills through vocal arpeggios, scales and call and response.
- You may be asked to demonstrate musical knowledge through a brief
assessment.
Jam
Camp
Instrumentalists:
- Please prepare two contrasting musical selections that show your
unique style. Original music is welcome for one of the songs.
- You will be asked to play various scales and chords, and you will
have a short discussion about your music knowledge, interests and
goals with Coast Music faculty.
Drummers:
- Be prepared to play a short musical exerpt of your choice. You
can play with Coast Music faculty, with a recording or solo.
- Coast Music faculty will ask you to demonstrate your ability to
play a variety of styles including various pop, rock and funk styles.
- There will be a brief discussion about your musical knowledge,
interests and goals to help us prepare for the program this summer.
Vocalists:
- Be prepared to sing two short music selections of your choice.
Original music is welcome.
- You will be asked to demonstrate your vocal range and listening
skills through vocal arpeggios, scales and call and response.
- You may be asked to demonstrate musical knowledge through a brief
assessment, and there will be a brief discussion about your musical
interests and goals.
Chamber
Music Intensive
Instrumentalists:
-Please prepare
to play one classical musical selection of your choice that shows
your ability to play with good time, phrasing, technique, tone and
overall musicianship.
- You will be asked to play various scales, chords (if applicable)
and arpeggios in Major and minor keys
- Please be prepared to read one or two short musical example(s).
Vocalists:
- Please prepare one art song, classical style musical theatre selection
(non-belter) or aria that shows your range, technical ability, sense
of tone, phrasing and overall musicianship.
- You will be asked to sing various scales and arpeggios in order
for us to assess your vocal range.
- You may also be asked to read one or two short musical example(s).
Boot
Camp for Rock Stars and Divas
Instrumentalists:
- Please prepare one short musical selection. You can choose to
play solo or with Coast music faculty.
- You will be asked to demonstrate your ability to play various
major and minor scales and chords.
- You may be asked to read a short musical example.
Drummers:
- Please be prepared to play a short excerpt of music to demonstrate
your ability to play in time with other musicians.
- Coast Music faculty will ask you to demonstrate your ability to
play a variety of styles which may include various pop, rock and
R&B grooves.
Vocalists:
- Please prepare 16-32 measures of one pop or rock song that shows
your range and sense of style.
- You will be asked to demonstrate your vocal range and listening
skills through vocal arpeggios, scales and call and response.
- You may be asked to demonstrate musical knowledge through a brief
assessment.
